A Review of the Najad 440 Yacht

The Najad 440 is a pleasing yacht through and through, both in detail and construction. From the retractable bow thruster in its own forepeak locker to the jatoba-wood cabin sole to the pair of hooks by the lifeline gate that keep the jib-furling line clear, this boat is set up just right, as you’d expect at this price.

Both the aft-cockpit version and the center-cockpit model I sailed boast proportionately more sail area relative to waterline length and displacement than some performance-oriented boats I’ve sailed. And designed by the firm of Judel/Vrolijk & Co., the 440 was not going to be a slug. In fact, we managed to get 4.5 knots with a 90-percent jib while reaching in 5 knots of wind.

The forward and aft cabins both have good-size double berths and heads with separate showers. There are plenty of storage compartments throughout. The cabin sole is all on one level, and there’s no threshold to step over anywhere; a substantial ring-frame supports the partners and shroud bases.

With many ports and a large opening hatch, the saloon is bright, comfortable, and airy. The galley looks easy to work in both at sea and while anchored.

The cockpit is large and comfortable, with high coamings to lean back on and a fixed windscreen to which the dodger is attached. All lines are easy to reach. A nice touch: two seats let in to the stern pulpit for lounging and watching the wake as it rushes by this fast cruising boat.
